Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Heroin withdrawal begins as early as a few hours after the drug was last used. The body needs time to recover, and heroin withdrawal symptoms result. Heroin withdrawal can occur whenever any chronic use is discontinued or reduced. Users also experience severe craving for the drug during withdrawal, precipitating continued abuse and/or relapse. Major withdrawal symptoms peak between 48 and 72 hours after the last dose and typically subside after about a week; however, some individuals may show persistent withdrawal symptoms for months. Some people experience heroin withdrawal during hospitalization for health conditions other than their addiction. There are a few people in these circumstances that do not even realize they are experiencing withdrawal and think they just have the flu.
The rate of illegal drug use in the past year was higher among teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year than among those who did not receive treatment or counseling (28.8 vs. 17.0 percent, respectively). This pattern also was observed for marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.
Illegal drug use also was associated with the level of alcohol use. Among teens who were heavy drinkers in 2001, 65.3 percent also were current illegal drug users, whereas among nondrinkers, the rate was only 5.1 percent.
Liver failure has occurred in people that have taken ten to fifteen grams of acetaminophen, which is one of the active ingredients in Vicodin; taking fifteen to twenty grams can be fatal.
The specific drug categories with the largest number of recent initiates among persons aged 12 or older were nonmedical use of pain relievers (2.2 million) and marijuana use (2.1 million), followed by nonmedical use of tranquilizers (1.1 million), cocaine (1.0 million), Ecstasy (0.9 million), stimulants (0.8 million), and inhalants (0.8 million).
Teens aged 12 to 17 who had engaged in fighting or other delinquent behaviors were more likely than other teens to have used illegal drugs in the past month. For example, in 2008, past month illegal drug use was reported by 15.9 percent of teens who had gotten into a serious fight at school or work in the past year compared with 7.3 percent of those who had not engaged in fighting, and by 39.8 percent of those who had stolen or tried to steal something worth over $50 in the past year compared with 7.7 percent of those who had not engaged in such theft.
