Marijuana use is associated with dependence, respiratory and mental illness, poor motor performance, and impaired cognitive and immune system functioning, among other negative effects.
Although there was no significant change between 2004 and 2005 in the number of past year initiates of LSD or Ecstasy, there were declines between 2002 and 2003. The number of past year LSD initiates among persons aged 12 or older was 338,000 in 2002, 200,000 in 2003, 235,000 in 2004, and 243,000 in 2005. The number of Ecstasy initiates in the past year was 1.2 million in 2002, 642,000 in 2003, 607,000 in 2004, and 615,000 in 2005. Most (65.9 percent) of the recent Ecstasy initiates in 2005 were aged 18 or older at the time they first used Ecstasy. Among past year initiates aged 12 to 49, the average age at initiation of Ecstasy in 2005 was 20.7 years.
Methadone, which is a long-acting synthetic narcotic analgesic, was used for the first time as a maintenance treatment for treating drug addictions in the mid-1960s by Dr. Vincent Dole and Marie Nyswander of Rockefeller University.
In 2008, about 10.1 million persons aged 12 to 20 (26.4 percent of this age group) reported drinking alcohol in the past month. Approximately 6.6 million (17.4 percent) were binge drinkers, and 2.1 million (5.5 percent) were heavy drinkers. The rates for current and binge alcohol use are lower than they were in 2007, when they were 27.9 and 18.6 percent, respectively.
In 2008, 6.4 percent of persons aged 18 or older (14.3 million persons) had at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year. Over 1 in 25 adults (4.2 percent or 9.5 million persons) had past year MDE with severe impairment.
Over half (51.0 percent) of teens aged 12 to 17 reported in 2005 that it would be "fairly easy" or "very easy" for them to obtain marijuana if they wanted some. Around one quarter reported it would be easy to get cocaine (24.9 percent) or crack (25.3 percent). One in seven (14.0 percent) indicated that heroin would be "fairly" or "very" easily available, and about one in six (15.7 percent) said it would be easy for them to get LSD if they wanted some.
