Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
An individual's perception of the risks of substance use has been shown to be related to whether he or she actually uses the substance (e.g., Bachman, Johnston, & O'Malley, 1998). In 2002, the State with the lowest rate of perceived great risk of using marijuana occasionally (once a month) among persons aged 12 or older was Massachusetts. Only about 25 percent of all persons aged 12 or older in Massachusetts thought that occasional use was a great risk. This is striking in that Massachusetts reported only a moderate rate (6.3 percent) of past month use of marijuana in the 12 or older age group. States in the West and Northeast accounted for most of the lowest rates of perceptions of great risk of marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older. In addition to Massachusetts, there were Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Seven of the States having the lowest perceived risks also reported rates in the highest fifth for past month marijuana use for persons aged 12 or older. Similarly, of the 10 States indicating the highest perceived risk of occasional marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older, six had past month marijuana use rates that were in the lowest fifth (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia).
The Washington Post recently reported on a case concerning an individual who got high on bath salts. According to the popular newspaper, ?he took his skinning knife and slit his face and stomach repeatedly"; the man survived, but others may not be so lucky.
Increases in the perceived risk of using a substance often are associated with decreases in the rate of use of that substance. Looking over the 5 year period, the proportion of teens aged 12 to 17 who reported perceiving great risk from smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day increased from 63.1 percent in 2002 to 68.7 percent in 2006. The rate of past month cigarette smoking among teens aged 12 to 17 dropped from 13.0 to 10.4 percent during the same period.
Those lower on the totem pole, such as heroin dealers will find that their financial gains do not compare to those in the upper levels of heroin trafficking. This is attributed to the fact that they are more often than not addicts themselves and are frequently in and out of jail. Also, U.S. laws and law enforcement have stepped up their efforts on interrupting the flow of heroin into the United States. They have also increased their efforts in arresting heroin distributors and heroin dependent individuals who commit crimes to maintain their addiction.
Methamphetamine users who discontinue the drug generally experience an intense desire for the drug; this is to be expected and in some rare instances continues for the duration of the user's lifetime.
LSD use during pregnancy has been reported to increase the risk of spontaneous abortion and congenital abnormalities. Expectant mothers should never use LSD or any other type of drug, or alcohol without advice from their doctors.
