Estimates described in this section refer to treatment received to reduce or stop drug or alcohol use, or for medical problems associated with the use of drugs or alcohol. This includes treatment received in the past year at any location, such as in a hospital, at a rehabilitation facility (outpatient or inpatient), mental health center, emergency room, private doctor's office, self-help group, or prison/jail. The definition of treatment in this section is different from the definition of treatment used in measuring the drug abuse treatment gap, which is described in Section 7.3 and excludes treatment at an emergency room, private doctor's office, self-help group, prison or jail, or at a hospital as an outpatient.
The past year prevalence of MDE in 2006 was lowest for those aged 50 or older (5.1 percent). The rates were similar among persons aged 18 to 25 (9.0 percent) and those aged 26 to 49 (8.5 percent).
Most teens (89.8 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice. Among these teens, only 5.1 percent had used marijuana in the past month. In general, most heroin comes from opium poppy farms in SW Asia (the "Golden Crescent," primarily Afghanistan and Pakistan), SE Asia (the "Golden Triangle," primarily in Myanmar), and Latin American (primarily Colombia). The cultivation of opium in Afghanistan reached its peak in 1999, when 225,000 acres - 350 square miles - of poppies were sown. A year later, after American and British troops had removed the Taliban and installed the interim government, the land under cultivation leapt back to 285 square miles, with Afghanistan supplanting Burma to become the world's largest opium producer once more.
