Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005, Asians had the lowest rate of past month alcohol use. Only 7.0 percent of Asian teens were current drinkers, while 11.6 percent of blacks, 12.2 percent of American Indians or Alaska Natives, 13.0 percent of those reporting two or more races, 16.7 percent of Hispanics, and 18.5 percent of white teens were current drinkers.

Past year nonmedical users of prescription type psychotherapeutic drugs are asked how they obtained the drugs they recently used nonmedically. Rates averaged for 2007 and 2008 show that over half of the nonmedical users of prescription type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives aged 12 or older said they got the drugs they used most recently "from a friend or relative for free." In a follow up question, the majority of these respondents indicated that their friend or relative had obtained the drugs from one doctor.

Alcohol consumption levels also were associated with tobacco use. Among heavy alcohol users aged 12 or older, 58.0 percent smoked cigarettes in the past month, while only 19.2 percent of non binge current drinkers and 16.1 percent of persons who did not drink alcohol in the past month were current smokers. Smokeless tobacco use and cigar use also were more prevalent among heavy drinkers (12.5 and 17.8 percent, respectively) than among non binge drinkers (2.2 and 4.6 percent) and nondrinkers (2.1 and 2.0 percent).

Another form of drug rehab treatment that is available is inpatient short-term rehab. This type of treatment program is somewhat different from many other types of drug rehab programs. An individual who attends an inpatient short-term treatment center is provided with substance abuse treatment for approximately 4-6 weeks. Typically this form of drug rehab treatment is administered by medical professionals and trained counselors. The primary focus of inpatient short-tem drug rehab treatment is on medical stabilization, abstinence, and behavior modification.

Except among teens aged 12 to 17, boys were more likely than girls to report past month alcohol drinking. In 2001, 54.8 percent of boys aged 12 or older were current drinkers compared with 42.3 percent of girls.

Rates of current cigarette use among adults aged 18 or older decreased among unemployed persons between 2002 and 2005; rates were 49.8 percent in 2002, 42.7 percent in 2003, 44.1 percent in 2004, and 43.8 percent in 2005. Among adults who were employed full time, current use of smokeless tobacco increased from 3.7 percent in 2004 to 4.2 percent in 2005.
