Past month nonmedical use of prescription-type drugs among young adults increased from 5.4 percent in 2002 to 6.3 percent in 2005. This was primarily due to an increase in pain reliever use, which was 4.1 percent in 2002 and 4.7 percent in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Because amphetamine?s withdrawal symptoms are magnified in chronic users who abruptly stop taking the drug, it is recommended that the amphetamine user participate in a residential drug treatment program specializing in this type of withdrawal and addiction treatment.

State estimates for past year alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older ranged from 6.0 percent in Tennessee to 10.8 percent in North Dakota.
