Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
In 2005, an estimated 2.9 million persons aged 12 or older used an illegal drug for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to nearly 8,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the number in 2004 (2.8 million). Most initiates (56.1 percent) were younger than age 18 when they first used, and the majority of new users (56.2 percent) were female. The average age at initiation among persons aged 12 to 49 was 18.7 years.
GHB was widely available in the U.S. in health food stores, until the substance became banned in the United States. Many false claims were made in order to promote GHB such as stating that using the substance could help build muscles, burn fat and improve sex.
There were significant increases in the lifetime prevalence of use from 2003 to 2004 in several categories of pain relievers among those aged 18 to 25. Specific pain relievers with statistically significant increases in lifetime use were Vicodin?, Lortab?, or Lorcet? (from 15.0 to 16.5 percent); Percocet?, Percodan?, or Tylox? (from 7.8 to 8.7 percent); hydrocodone products (from 16.3 to 17.4 percent); OxyContin? (from 3.6 to 4.3 percent); and oxycodone products (from 8.9 to 10.1 percent).
In 2007, 11.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had participated in substance use prevention programs outside of school within the past year. Almost four fifths (77.9 percent) reported having seen or heard drug or alcohol prevention messages from sources outside of school, lower than in 2002 when the percentage was 83.2 percent. Most (59.6 percent) teens reported in 2007 that they had talked with a parent in the past year about the dangers of drug, tobacco, or alcohol use.
It is commonly known that some of the most powerful prescription medications have been marketed aggressively; clinicians need to realize that an individual does not need a powerful opiate for every headache.
Among adults aged 50 to 59, the rate of current illegal drug use increased from 2.7 to 4.6 percent between 2002 and 2008. For those aged 50 to 54, the rate increased from 3.4 percent in 2002 to 6.0 percent in 2006, then dropped to 4.3 percent in 2008, not significantly different from the rate in either 2002 or 2006. Among those aged 55 to 59, current illegal drug use showed an increase from 1.9 percent in 2002 to 5.0 percent in 2008. These patterns and trends may partially reflect the aging into these age groups of members of the baby boom cohort, whose rates of illegal drug use have been higher than those of older cohorts.
