Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Illegal drug use also was associated with the level of alcohol use. Among teens who were heavy drinkers in 2001, 65.3 percent also were current illegal drug users, whereas among nondrinkers, the rate was only 5.1 percent.

Adults who first used drugs at a younger age are more likely to be classified with dependence on or abuse of drugs than adults who initiated use at a later age. Among those who first tried marijuana at age 14 or younger, 11.8 percent were classified with dependence on or abuse of an illegal drug in the past year compared with only 2.1 percent of adults who had first used marijuana at age 18 or older. This pattern of higher rates of dependence or abuse among persons initiating their use of marijuana at younger ages was observed by demographic subgroups, as well as separately for rates of dependence and rates of abuse. A similar pattern was observed for age at first use of alcohol and dependence on or abuse of alcohol among adults.

Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2006, 3.3 million (12.9 percent) used a tobacco product in the past month, and 2.6 million (10.4 percent) used cigarettes. The rate of past month cigarette use among 12 to 17 year olds declined from 13.0 percent in 2002 to 10.4 percent in 2006. Past month use of smokeless tobacco, however, was higher in 2006 (2.4 percent) than in 2002 (2.0 percent).

Rates of binge and heavy alcohol use did not change significantly between 2007 and 2008 for full-time employed or unemployed adults. However, the number of unemployed binge and heavy drinkers did increase (from 2.3 million to 3.0 million for binge use and from 851,000 to 1.2 million for heavy use).

Among teens in 2001, rates of any illegal drug use ranged from 14.4 percent in completely rural nonmetropolitan counties to 10.4 percent in less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties. The rate of use for teens in large metropolitan areas was 10.4 percent.

Related to the prevalence of marijuana use is the number of persons in a period of time who used marijuana for the first time ever. When the number of first-time users of a substance increases for a number of consecutive years, the prevalence rate for the substance tends to increase also. The average annual incidence of marijuana for this report is estimated somewhat differently than in the national report. The estimate for a single year is averaged over the 2 most recent years and expressed as a percentage or rate per 100 person years of exposure.6 For the combined years 2002.2003, the national marijuana incidence rate for all persons aged 12 or older was 1.8 percent. Vermont had the highest rate, 2.7 percent (Table B.5).
