Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The treatment type most often reported by the adult population in 2005 was prescription medication (10.7 percent), followed by outpatient treatment (6.8 percent). About 2.1 million adults (1.0 percent) received inpatient care for mental health problems during the past year. These patterns of utilization were not significantly different from those seen in 2004.
There were 9.6 million people aged 12 or older (3.9 percent) who were current users of illegal drugs other than marijuana in 2006. Most (7.0 million persons, or 2.8 percent of the population) used psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically. In addition to the estimated 5.2 million nonmedical users of pain relievers in 2006, 1.8 million used tranquilizers, 1.2 million used stimulants, and 385,000 used sedatives. The numbers of nonmedical users of tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives were similar to the corresponding numbers in 2005, and the percentage rates also remained stable.
OxyContin use may cause severe hypotension, which occurs when blood pressure during and after each heartbeat is much lower than usual. This means the heart, brain, and other parts of the body do not get enough blood.
There are many stories of professionals, such as lawyers, physicians, bankers, and athletes, with daily cocaine habits costing hundreds to thousands of dollars, with binges in the $20,000-$50,000 range. The consequences of their cocaine addiction may be loss of job and profession, loss of family, bankruptcy, and death.
Opiates effect the brainstem, which controls things your body does automatically, like breathing. Opiates can act on the brainstem to slow breathing, stop coughing, and lessen feelings of pain.
In 2008, 3.1 million teens aged 12 to 17 (12.7 percent) received treatment or counseling for problems with behavior or emotions in the specialty mental health setting (inpatient or outpatient care). Additionally, 11.8 percent of teens received services in the education setting, and 2.9 percent received mental health services in the general medical setting in the past 12 months. Mental health services were received in both the specialty setting and either the education or general medical settings (i.e., care from multiple settings) by 5.3 percent of teens.
