Heroin enters the brain, where it is converted to morphine and binds to receptors known as opioid receptors. Opioid receptors are located in many areas of the brain (and in the body), especially those involved in the perception of pain and in reward.
In 2008, 18.3 million persons aged 12 or older were classified with dependence on or abuse of alcohol. This represents 7.3 percent of the population. The number and percentage have remained similar since 2002.
During 2007, Xanax abuse contributed to over 2 million cases of prescription drug dependence; drug rehab across the U.S. have reported that the number of individuals that are seeking assistance for Xanax addiction has almost doubled in the last ten years.

From 1999 to 2000, the use of MDMA increased among all three grade levels measured in this study - 8th, 10th, and 12th.
