In 2006, approximately one in eight teens aged 12 to 17 (11.4 percent) reported that they had participated in drug, tobacco, or alcohol prevention programs outside of school in the past year. However, the prevalence of past month use of illegal drugs, marijuana, cigarettes, or binge alcohol was not significantly lower among those who participated in these prevention programs outside of school (8.9 percent, 6.1 percent, 8.9 percent, and 9.8 percent, respectively) than among those who did not (9.9 percent, 6.7 percent, 10.6 percent, and 10.4 percent, respectively).

In 2005, among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of substance dependence or abuse was highest among American Indians or Alaska Natives (21.0 percent) and lowest among Asians (4.5 percent). Other racial/ethnic groups reported generally similar rates: Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders (11.0 percent), persons reporting two or more races (10.9 percent), whites (9.4 percent), Hispanics (9.3 percent), and blacks (8.5 percent). These rates were all similar to the rates seen in 2004.

There were significant increases in the lifetime prevalence of use from 2003 to 2004 in several categories of pain relievers among those aged 18 to 25. Specific pain relievers with statistically significant increases in lifetime use were Vicodin?, Lortab?, or Lorcet? (from 15.0 to 16.5 percent); Percocet?, Percodan?, or Tylox? (from 7.8 to 8.7 percent); hydrocodone products (from 16.3 to 17.4 percent); OxyContin? (from 3.6 to 4.3 percent); and oxycodone products (from 8.9 to 10.1 percent).

Almost all addicted individuals believe they can stop using drugs or alcohol on their own in the beginning and most eventually will try to stop without professional help. However, most of these attempts generally will result in failure in terms of achieving long-term abstinence.

The number of sedatives initiates remained just under 100,000 per year between 1988 and 1994. In 1995, the number of initiates rose to 111,000 and continued increasing thereafter to 175,000 in 2000.
