Among persons aged 12 or older, whites in 2006 were more likely than other racial/ethnic groups to report current use of alcohol (55.8 percent). The rates were 47.1 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 41.8 percent for Hispanics, 40.0 percent for blacks, 37.2 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 36.7 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 35.4 percent for Asians.
Nationally in 2002.2003, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year illegal drug dependence or abuse (4.0 percent) among persons aged 12 or older, and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (four States) or the Northeast (four States). The highest rates for past year illegal drug dependence or abuse occurred in the 18 to 25 age group, with Rhode Island having the highest rate (12.7 percent) (Table B.16).
In 2008, there were 729,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used inhalants for the first time within the past 12 months; 70.4 percent were under age 18 when they first used. Nonmedical users of prescription type psychotherapeutic drugs are asked questions regarding how they obtained the drugs they recently used nonmedically.
