Among persons aged 12 or older, whites in 2006 were more likely than other racial/ethnic groups to report current use of alcohol (55.8 percent). Nationally in 2002.2003, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year illegal drug dependence or abuse (4.0 percent) among persons aged 12 or older, and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (four States) or the Northeast (four States). The highest rates for past year illegal drug dependence or abuse occurred in the 18 to 25 age group, with Rhode Island having the highest rate (12.7 percent) (Table B.16).
In 2008, there were 729,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used inhalants for the first time within the past 12 months; 70.4 percent were under age 18 when they first used. There was no significant change in the number of inhalant initiates from 2007 to 2008, but the number in 2008 was significantly lower than the estimate in 2005 (877,000).
Nonmedical users of prescription type psychotherapeutic drugs are asked questions regarding how they obtained the drugs they recently used nonmedically. In both 2005 and 2006, over half of the nonmedical users of prescription type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives said they obtained the drugs they used most recently "from a friend or relative for free." A follow up question added in 2006 asked these respondents where their friend or relative had obtained the drugs.
