Heroin overdose takes the lives of many users each year. It is not a surprise that those who abuse heroin are at an increased risk of death. Their excess mortality rate ranges between six to twenty times their peers who are of the same age and gender and have not abused heroin. The causes of this excess mortality are manifold, including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and violence. Despite the HIV pandemic among injecting drug users, deaths attributed to overdose remain a major cause of mortality for heroin users, and in many countries is the leading cause of death. Typically, boys are the most predominant casualties of a heroin overdose. With around 80% of heroin overdose deaths reported being male.

Cocaine users report that they are never able to achieve the "high" they felt the first time that they used the drug. A tolerance to the drug is developed so that the euphoric feeling users get is not as intense nor does it last as long.

The major morphine withdrawal symptoms have been reported to peak between 48 and 96 hours after the last dose of the drug and to subside after about 8 to 10 days.

Deliberately inhaling form a paper bag or in a closed area increases the chances that an individual will suffocate to death while "huffing".

There have been many cases when Xanax has been used as a "date rape drug", due to the sudden onset of the medication, and the side effect of memory loss.

Among full-time college students aged 19, current cigarette smoking increased from 24.4 percent in 2005 to 28.8 percent in 2006; however, it decreased for students aged 20 (from 32.3 to 27.2 percent) and 21 (from 36.3 to 30.2 percent). Past month cigarette smoking also declined from 32.9 to 23.5 percent among Hispanic full-time students aged 18 to 22. Use of any tobacco product and of the individual products remained stable for persons aged 18 to 22 who were not enrolled as full-time college students.
