The rate of treatment for mental health problems among teens aged 12 to 17 who used illegal drugs in the past year (32.0 percent) was higher than the rate among teens who did not use illegal drugs (19.3 percent).
Nationally in 2002.2003, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year illegal drug dependence or abuse (4.0 percent) among persons aged 12 or older, and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (four States) or the Northeast (four States). The highest rates for past year illegal drug dependence or abuse occurred in the 18 to 25 age group, with Rhode Island having the highest rate (12.7 percent) (Table B.16).
Although rates of use of most drugs in 2001 were higher among teens and young adults compared with older adults, the age distribution of users varied considerably by type of drug. About half (51 percent) of current illegal drug users were aged 12 to 25. However, in 2001, 86 percent of hallucinogen users and 76 percent of inhalant users were aged 12 to 25. Conversely, only 40 percent of cocaine users and 45 percent of nonmedical psychotherapeutics users were aged 12 to 25.
