Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
In 2008, 9.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 were current illegal drug users: 6.7 percent used marijuana, 2.9 percent engaged in nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics, 1.1 percent used inhalants, 1.0 percent used hallucinogens, and 0.4 percent used cocaine.
Research shows that the memory impairment from Ecstasy use is not proportional to the number of tablets consumed and may occur with relatively low usage.
Living life without the need for drugs or alcohol is why people enroll in a drug rehab center. People who are addicted to drugs or alcohol often require help to stop using. An addict may try many times to quit on their own to no avail. This is because addiction is a very difficult problem to recover from without help. It takes time and a lot of effort to learn how to live drug-free and change one's approach and outlook about life in general.
Current illegal drug use was associated with race/ethnicity in 2005. The rate was lowest among Asians (3.1 percent). Rates were 12.8 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 12.2 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 9.7 percent for blacks, 8.7 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, 8.1 percent for whites, and 7.6 percent for Hispanics.
In 2008, among the 4.0 million persons aged 12 or older who received treatment for alcohol or illegal drug use in the past year, 2.2 million persons received treatment at a self help group, and 1.5 million received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an outpatient. There were 1.1 million persons who received treatment at a mental health center as an outpatient, 743,000 persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient, 675,000 at a hospital as an inpatient, 672,000 at a private doctor's office, 374,000 at an emergency room, and 343,000 at a prison or jail. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008 or between 2002 and 2008, except that the number of persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient in 2008 was lower than that in 2007 (1.0 million) and 2002 (1.1 million).
Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005, the rate of current illegal drug use was highest among American Indians or Alaska Natives, about twice the overall rate among teens (19.2 vs. 9.9 percent, respectively). The rates for other groups were 11.0 percent among blacks, 10.1 percent among whites, 9.7 percent among those reporting two or more races, 9.4 percent among Hispanics, and 3.3 percent among Asians.
