Interesting Facts and Statistics:

The Cambria County Drug Task Force in Pennsylvania reported an increase in the number of pharmacy burglaries in the county is directly related to OxyContin abuse.

A NIDA study found that Life Skills Training (LST), a thoroughly tested, school-based, universal prevention program, significantly reduced drug use among minority middle school students that were failing academically and who had friends who drank or used drugs. Previous research has directly linked academic and social factors to an increased risk of substance abuse. One year after the LST program, these same number of high-risk teens reported lower rates of cigarette, alcohol, and inhalant use than a comparable group of nonparticipating students.

Individuals who have the desire to recover from a drug or alcohol addiction first need to realize that they have a problem and be willing to work towards a solution. Addiction recovery will generally require long term drug rehab treatment, but varies individually according to the person's drug addiction history.

The overall rate of current illegal drug use remained stable from 2007 to 2008 among teens aged 12 to 17, as did the rates for most specific drugs, except for hallucinogens and the nonmedical use of psychotherapeutics. An increase was seen in the rate of past month hallucinogen use, which went from 0.7 percent in 2007 to 1.0 percent in 2008, driven in part by an increase in Ecstasy use from 0.3 to 0.4 percent. However, the rate of nonmedical use of prescription psychotherapeutic drugs among teens declined from 3.3 percent in 2007 to 2.9 percent in 2008, driven largely by a decrease in the misuse of pain relievers from 2.7 to 2.3 percent.

The widespread availability of benzodiazepines such as Ativan has increasingly made them common drugs of abuse and addiction.

In 2008, current cigarette smoking was more common among unemployed adults aged 18 or older than among adults who were working full time or part time (43.0 vs. 27.2 and 23.8 percent, respectively). Cigar smoking followed a similar pattern, with 9.8 percent of unemployed adults reporting past month use compared with 6.4 percent of full time workers and 5.5 percent of part time workers.
