Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Among adults aged 26 or older in 2005, 3.0 percent used smokeless tobacco in the past month. Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rate was 2.1 percent, and among young adults aged 18 to 25, the rate was 5.1 percent. For all three of these age groups, estimates of smokeless tobacco use in 2005 were essentially the same as those obtained in 2002.
Across geographic regions in 2008, underage current alcohol use rates were higher in the Northeast (30.0 percent) than in the Midwest (27.1 percent), and both rates were higher than in the South (24.7 percent). The rate in the West (25.8 percent) was similar to rates in the South and Midwest regions, but was significantly lower than the rate in the Northeast.
There are many prescription drug rehab programs across the country. Many programs offer detoxification as part of their plan. Detox safely manages the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal which are associated with stopping prescription drug use. This is only the initial step on the road to recovery. Alone, detox does little to change long-term prescription drug addiction.
Dependent drug abuse occurs when a person becomes addicted to a drug after prolonged or heavy use over time. The individual will feel a craving and they will have to take the drug consistently in order to feel normal, or to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms.
The number of persons aged 12 or older initiating use of smokeless tobacco in the past year was higher in 2006 (1.3 million) than in 2005 (1.1 million) and more than 30 percent higher than in 2002 (951,000). More than three quarters (77.8 percent) of new initiates in 2006 were male, and about half (49.3 percent) were under age 18 when they first used.
Rates of binge alcohol use in 2006 were 1.5 percent among 12 or 13 year olds, 8.9 percent among 14 or 15 year olds, 20.0 percent among 16 or 17 year olds, 36.2 percent among persons aged 18 to 20, and 46.1 percent among those aged 21 to 25. The rate peaked at ages 21 to 23 (49.3 percent at age 21, 48.9 percent at age 22, and 47.2 percent at age 23), then decreased beyond young adulthood from 34.2 percent of 26 to 34 year olds to 18.4 percent of persons aged 35 or older.
