As in prior years, boys were more likely than girls among persons aged 12 or older to be current illegal drug users in 2006 (10.5 vs. 6.2 percent, respectively). The rate of past month marijuana use for boys was about twice as high as the rate for girls (8.1 vs. 4.1 percent). However, boys and girls had similar rates of past month use of stimulants (0.5 percent for both boys and girls), Ecstasy (0.2 percent for both), sedatives (0.1 and 0.2 percent, respectively), OxyContin? (0.1 percent for both), LSD (0.1 and less than 0.1 percent), and PCP (less than 0.1 percent for both).
In 2006, 79.4 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported having seen or heard drug or alcohol prevention messages from sources outside of school, which declined from 81.1 percent in 2005. The prevalence of past month use of illegal drugs, marijuana, cigarettes, or binge alcohol was lower among those who reported having such exposure (9.2 percent, 6.2 percent, 9.5 percent, and 10.0 percent, respectively) than among those who reported having no such exposure (12.0 percent, 8.5 percent, 13.8 percent, and 11.5 percent, respectively).

In 2008, an estimated 12.4 percent of persons aged 12 or older drove under the influence of alcohol at least once in the past year. This percentage has dropped since 2002, when it was 14.2 percent. The 2008 estimate corresponds to 30.9 million persons.
Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (i.e., part-time college students and persons not currently enrolled in college) to use alcohol in the past month, binge drink, and drink heavily. Among full-time college students in 2008, 61.0 percent were current drinkers, 40.5 percent binge drank, and 16.3 percent were heavy drinkers.
