A study from the University of Michigan during 2009 showed that almost ten-percent of high school seniors had tried Vicodin and about five-percent had used Oxycontin at least once.

Having MDE in the past year was associated with past year substance dependence or abuse in 2005. Among adults who had MDE in 2005, 19.9 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs, while among persons without MDE only 8.4 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs. Adults with MDE were more likely than those without MDE to be dependent on or abuse illegal drugs (8.3 vs. 2.1 percent) and alcohol (14.8 vs. 7.4 percent).

Most adults aged 18 or older with substance dependence or abuse in 2005 were employed either full or part time. Of the 20.2 million adults classified with dependence or abuse, 15.5 million (76.7 percent) were employed.

Proprietary names for many of the benzodiazapines include Xanax, Klonopin and Valium; generic versions exist form most of these brand name medications.

The rate of illegal drug use in the past year was higher among teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year than among those who did not receive treatment or counseling (28.8 vs. 17.0 percent, respectively). This pattern also was observed for marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics.

Crystal methamphetamine abuse is directly associated with a vast array of serious health problems; many deaths have also been reported in the U.S. that have been linked to the abuse of this toxic and highly addictive drug.
