As was the case from 2002 through 2007, the rate of substance dependence or abuse for boys aged 12 or older in 2008 was about twice as high as the rate for girls. For boys in 2008, the rate was 11.5 percent, which was down from the 12.5 percent in 2007, while for girls, it was 6.4 percent, which was higher than the 5.7 percent in 2007. Among teens aged 12 to 17, however, the rate of substance dependence or abuse among boys was lower than the rate among girls in 2008 (7.0 vs. 8.2 percent).
Methamphetamine is ingested differently, often according to locations in the United States and according to the various different age groups.
In 2005, among young adults aged 18 to 25, the rate of binge drinking was 41.9 percent, and the rate of heavy drinking was 15.3 percent. These rates are similar to the rates in 2002, 2003, and 2004.
Heroin craving can persist years after drug cessation, particularly upon exposure to triggers such as stress or people, places, and things associated with drug use.
Among full-time college students aged 18 to 22, there were increases from 2007 to 2008 in the current rate of use of hallucinogens (from 1.0 to 2.1 percent). Increases were seen for the specific hallucinogens Ecstasy (from 0.5 to 1.2 percent) and LSD (from 0.3 to 0.6 percent). There were no significant changes in the rates of current use for any drugs among persons aged 18 to 22 who were not full-time college students.

Detox safely manages the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal which are associated with stopping prescription drug use. This is only the initial step on the road to recovery.
