In 2008, there were 729,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used inhalants for the first time within the past 12 months; 70.4 percent were under age 18 when they first used. THC, the main active ingredient in marijuana, acts upon specific sites in the brain called cannabinoid receptors, triggering a series of cellular reactions that ultimately lead to the ?high? users experience when they smoke marijuana.

There is a wealth of information regarding heroin facts and the short term effects of the drug. Soon after injection (or inhalation), heroin crosses the blood-brain barrier. In the brain, heroin is converted to morphine and binds rapidly to opioid receptors. Abusers typically report feeling a surge of pleasurable sensation - a "rush." The intensity of the rush is a function of how much drug is taken and how rapidly the drug enters the brain and binds to the natural opioid receptors.

National Inhalant Prevention Coalition was formed to help bring awareness about inhalant abuse through educating the community about the dangers of "huffing".

Among teens aged 12 to 17, there were 1.3 million (4.9 percent) who needed treatment for an illegal drug use problem in 2005. Of this group, only 142,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (11.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment), leaving 1.1 million teens who needed treatment but did not receive it at a specialty facility.

Among adults aged 18 or older with MDE in the past year, 9.6 percent were heavy alcohol users in the past month, higher than the 7.1 percent of heavy alcohol users without MDE in the past year. Similarly, among adults with past year MDE, the rate of daily cigarette use in the past month was 29.1 percent, while the rate was 15.2 percent among adults without past year MDE.
