Substance abuse can affect individuals from all different walks of life and anyone can succumb to a drug or alcohol addiction. It does not make a difference how rich or how poor the individual is or even if they have a wonderful family life.
Illegal drugs other than marijuana include cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. A number of States (six) that fell into the top fifth for past month use of an illegal drug among those aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for current use of an illegal drug other than marijuana: Alaska, District of Columbia, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington. The other States in the top fifth (Arizona, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Oklahoma) reported rates of current use of an illegal drug that were lower and rates of past month marijuana use that fell into the middle or next-to-lowest fifth.
In 2006, the average age at first marijuana use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 17.4 years, the same as the average in 2005. Among recent initiates aged 12 or older who initiated use prior to the age of 21, the mean ages at first use were 15.9 years in 2002, 15.9 years in 2003, 16.0 years in 2004, 16.0 years in 2005, and 16.1 years in 2006.
Based on 2004-2005 combined data, among persons who needed but did not receive illegal drug or alcohol use treatment, felt they needed treatment, and made an effort to receive treatment, the four most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) cost or insurance barriers (44.4 percent), (b) other access barriers (21.2 percent), (c) not ready to stop using (21.1 percent), and (d) stigma (18.5 percent).
