Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002, only five of the States with the 10 highest rates of past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the top fifth. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year cocaine use both among persons aged 12 or older and those aged 26 or older, but it was in the lowest fifth for those aged 12 to 17 and for those aged 18 to 25. Colorado was the only State that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

Eli Lilly and Company introduced Methadone as a medication for the treatment of pain, in 1947; since then, the drug has been widely used in treating heroin addiction.

In 2008, among the 4.0 million persons aged 12 or older who received treatment for alcohol or illegal drug use in the past year, 2.2 million persons received treatment at a self help group, and 1.5 million received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an outpatient. There were 1.1 million persons who received treatment at a mental health center as an outpatient, 743,000 persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient, 675,000 at a hospital as an inpatient, 672,000 at a private doctor's office, 374,000 at an emergency room, and 343,000 at a prison or jail. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008 or between 2002 and 2008, except that the number of persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient in 2008 was lower than that in 2007 (1.0 million) and 2002 (1.1 million).

Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005, Asians had the lowest rate of past month alcohol use. Only 7.0 percent of Asian teens were current drinkers, while 11.6 percent of blacks, 12.2 percent of American Indians or Alaska Natives, 13.0 percent of those reporting two or more races, 16.7 percent of Hispanics, and 18.5 percent of white teens were current drinkers.

In 2008, an estimated 20.1 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illegal drug users, meaning they had used an illegal drug during the month prior to the survey interview. This estimate represents 8.0 percent of the population aged 12 or older.

Teens who had engaged in fighting or other delinquent behaviors were more likely than other teens to have used illegal drugs. For example, past month illegal drug use was reported by 17.3 percent of teens who had gotten into serious fights at school or work in the past year compared with 7.6 percent of those who had not, and by 38.9 percent of those who had stolen or tried to steal something worth over $50 in the past year compared with 8.5 percent of those who had not.
