About three quarters (72.5 percent) of new initiates in 2008 were male, and a little less than half (47.4 percent) were under age 18 when they first used.

Among persons aged 12 or older in 2001, the rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse were highest among American Indians/Alaska Natives (13.9 percent) and among persons reporting more than one race (12.6 percent). Asians and Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders had the lowest rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse (3.7 and 4.9 percent, respectively). Among whites, the rate was 7.5 percent, among blacks, 6.2 percent, and among Hispanics, 7.8 percent.
