Hickory is located in Catawba County in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The city is recognized as the economic and cultural center of the Catawba River Valley. Hickory is situated in the nation's prominent furniture manufacturing region.
History
Hickory was established by Henry Weidner who migrated to the region from Montgomery Pennsylvania. In 1750, along with his brother-in-law he acquired a land grant which included thousands of acres of land. During the 1790's Henry Robinson built a tavern located under an enormous hickory tree in the northwest portion of Catawba County. The region took the name Hickory Tavern and the name stayed attached to the area for about 100 years. In 1859 the railroad reached Hickory Tavern and caused a significant increase in the population. In 1870 the city was incorporated and in 1891 Lenoir-Rhyne College was established by Lutheran pastors.

Hickory White, formerly named Hickory Manufacturing Company is regarded as one of the oldest furniture manufacturing companies in the country. The "Miracle of Hickory" occurred in 1944 when a devastating outbreak of polio swept the region. During the outbreak the citizens in the area along with the March of Dimes built a hospital for the children who were victims of polio. They transformed buildings that were part of a summer camp and the hospital was ready for patients in two and a half days.

Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, was first synthesized and patented in 1914 by the German drug company called Merck.
Non-medical purposes of prescription drugs would include misusing the drugs for recreational purposes and for psychic effects--to get high, to have fun, to get a lift, or to calm down.
The widespread availability of benzodiazepines such as Ativan has increasingly made them common drugs of abuse and addiction.
Much research has confirmed that the same sort of mechanisms that are involved in the development of a drug tolerance can eventually lead to profound changes in neurons and brain circuits, with the potential to severely compromise or even cause irreversible damage to the long-term health of the brain. One of the best examples of this is concerning glutamate-which is a neurotransmitter that influences the reward circuit and the ability to learn. When the optimal concentration of glutamate is altered by drug abuse, the brain attempts to compensate for this change in the level of the neurotransmitter, which can cause temporary or permanent impairment in cognitive function.
Methamphetamine users have been known to indulge in "binge" injecting, in which they inject large amounts of the drug ever couple of hours until they run out of it or become too disorganized to continue using.
The percentage of persons estimated to be dependent on illegal drugs in the past year was about 65 percent of those who were estimated to be dependent on or abused illegal drugs in the past year. State estimates for illegal drug dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 1.5 percent in Hawaii to 3.3 percent in the District of Columbia. The highest rates of illegal drug dependence were among persons aged 18 to 25, with the highest rate in Rhode Island.10.0 percent.
