In 2008, the number of persons aged 12 or older who had started smoking cigarettes daily within the past 12 months was 0.9 million. This estimate was similar to the estimates for 2002 (1.0 million) and 2007 (1.0 million). Of the new daily smokers in 2008, 37.2 percent, or 350,000 persons, were younger than age 18 when they started smoking daily. Rates of substance dependence or abuse were associated with current employment status in 2008. A higher percentage of unemployed adults aged 18 or older were classified with dependence or abuse (19.0 percent) than were full-time employed adults (10.2 percent) or part-time employed adults (11.0 percent).

Lack of attention to a Vicodin addiction can lead to an overdose of the drug that can ultimately lead to death; a sense of urgency is needed as related to opiate abuse treatment.

Opiates can be taken by mouth, smoked, or snorted, although addicts often prefer intravenous injection, which gives the strongest, quickest pleasure.

It is unclear at this time whether marijuana use causes mental problems, exacerbates them, or reflects an attempt to self-medicate symptoms already in existence.

The use of amphetamine and amphetamine-like drugs is contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or anatomically narrow angles.
