Illegal drug use in 2005 was associated with educational status. Among adults aged 18 or older, the rate of current illegal drug use was lower among college graduates (5.0 percent) compared with those who did not graduate from high school (9.8 percent), high school graduates (8.6 percent), and those with some college (8.9 percent). However, adults who had graduated from college were more likely to have tried illegal drugs in their lifetime when compared with adults who had not completed high school (51.7 vs. 37.7 percent).

Xanax is a benzodiazepine, which is a class of central nervous system depressant drugs that are supposed to be prescribed for the short-treatment of anxiety and occasional insomnia.

Methadone is generally taken orally and is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract within thirty minutes of being ingested. Methadone is also quickly distributed to body tissues where it is stored and then released into the plasma. This method of storage and release allows the patient to remain comfortable, free from craving and feeling stable for a long period of time.

In 2005, an estimated 22.2 million persons aged 12 or older were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year (9.1 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 3.3 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.6 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.4 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.

Over half (57.6 percent) of past year nonmedical users of stimulants aged 12 or older reported getting the drug from a friend or relative for free. Also, 6.5 percent bought the drug from a drug dealer or other stranger, and 7.2 percent bought it on the Internet. However, compared with overall stimulant users, methamphetamine users were less likely to purchase this stimulant on the Internet (1.5 percent) and more likely to purchase it from a drug dealer or other stranger (17.1 percent). Nearly half (47.7 percent) of past year methamphetamine users reported obtaining the drug from a friend or relative for free.
