Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Because significant tolerance to respiratory depression develops quickly with continued use of heroin and is lost just as quickly during withdrawal, it is often difficult to determine whether a heroin death was an accident, suicide or murder.
Drug addicts and alcoholics may find that they are able to sustain short periods of sobriety that will generally followed by a drug or alcohol relapse. This is why attending a drug or alcohol rehab treatment program will help the individual to maintain their focus on sobriety. With rare exception, it is only by getting intense long term professional help that individuals with severe drug addiction problems are able to achieve lasting sobriety.
Among young adults 18 to 22 years old, full time college students were less likely to be current cigarette smokers than their peers who were not enrolled full time in college. Cigarette use in the past month in 2006 was reported by 28.4 percent of full time college students, less than the rate of 43.5 percent for those not enrolled full time.
In 2006, 22.6 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that, in the past year, they had gotten into a serious fight at school or at work; 17.0 percent had taken part in a group-against-group fight; 3.2 percent had carried a handgun at least once; 3.3 percent had sold illegal drugs; 4.8 percent had, at least once, stolen or tried to steal something worth more than $50 (increased from 4.2 percent in 2005); and 7.9 percent had, in at least one instance, attacked others with the intent to harm or seriously hurt them.
Over 20% of methadone clinic patients have been using this form of treatment for over 10 years.
Individuals who make the decision go through a medically assisted withdrawal rehab to minimize the discomfort of withdrawal, but do not receive any further treatment, have been known to perform about the same in terms of their drug use as those who never had any form of professional help. Studies have consistently indicated that attending a drug rehab is an effective tool to reduce drug intake. Researchers also have found that drug abusers who have been through a drug rehab are more likely to consistently maintain employment following the completion of the program.
