Because significant tolerance to respiratory depression develops quickly with continued use of heroin and is lost just as quickly during withdrawal, it is often difficult to determine whether a heroin death was an accident, suicide or murder.
Drug addicts and alcoholics may find that they are able to sustain short periods of sobriety that will generally followed by a drug or alcohol relapse. In 2006, 22.6 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that, in the past year, they had gotten into a serious fight at school or at work; 17.0 percent had taken part in a group-against-group fight; 3.2 percent had carried a handgun at least once; 3.3 percent had sold illegal drugs; 4.8 percent had, at least once, stolen or tried to steal something worth more than $50 (increased from 4.2 percent in 2005); and 7.9 percent had, in at least one instance, attacked others with the intent to harm or seriously hurt them.
