The number of persons with substance dependence or abuse was stable between 2002 and 2006 (22.0 million in 2002, 21.6 million in 2003, 22.5 million in 2004, 22.2 million in 2005, and 22.6 million in 2006). In 2006, 18.8 million persons aged 12 or older were classified with dependence on or abuse of alcohol (7.6 percent), which has remained unchanged since 2002.
More than half (2.5 million) of the 3.9 million persons who received treatment for a substance use problem in the past year received treatment for alcohol use during their most recent treatment. There were 1.1 million persons who received treatment for marijuana use during their most recent treatment. Estimates for other drugs were 797,000 persons for cocaine, 466,000 for pain relievers, 358,000 for hallucinogens, 351,000 for stimulants, and 326,000 for heroin. (Note that respondents could indicate that they received treatment for more than one substance during their most recent treatment.)
Methadone generally has the same side effect as other opiates, including the development of tolerance and drug dependence. The histamines that are released by Methadone can cause hypotension or bronchospasms. Other symptoms of the drug may include constipation, nausea, sedation, vertigo, and edema.
The treatment type most often reported by the adult population in 2005 was prescription medication (10.7 percent), followed by outpatient treatment (6.8 percent). About 2.1 million adults (1.0 percent) received inpatient care for mental health problems during the past year. These patterns of utilization were not significantly different from those seen in 2004.
As of 2008, those in treatment for primary marijuana abuse had begun use at an early age: 56 percent by age 14.
A majority of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they disapprove of their peers using substances. In 2005, 88.2 percent of teens "strongly" or "somewhat" disapproved of their peers smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day; 80.8 percent reported similar feelings about their peers trying marijuana or hashish once or twice; and 85.6 percent strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day. These rates are similar to those observed in 2004.
