Rates of binge alcohol use in 2006 were 1.5 percent among 12 or 13 year olds, 8.9 percent among 14 or 15 year olds, 20.0 percent among 16 or 17 year olds, 36.2 percent among persons aged 18 to 20, and 46.1 percent among those aged 21 to 25. The rate peaked at ages 21 to 23 (49.3 percent at age 21, 48.9 percent at age 22, and 47.2 percent at age 23), then decreased beyond young adulthood from 34.2 percent of 26 to 34 year olds to 18.4 percent of persons aged 35 or older.
Rates of cocaine use by college students over the previous 5 years has varied between 2.0% of all students in 1994 to 4.8% in 2000.
SMI in the past year was associated with past year substance dependence or abuse in 2008. Among adults aged 18 or older with SMI, 25.2 percent (2.5 million) were dependent on or abused illegal drugs or alcohol. The rate among adults without SMI was 8.3 percent (17.9 million).
For opiate addicts, the beginning of treatment is detoxification, a controlled and medically supervised withdrawal from opiates. Detox by itself is not a solution, because most addicts will eventually resume taking the drug unless they get further help.
