There were 9.6 million people aged 12 or older (3.9 percent) who were current users of illegal drugs other than marijuana in 2006. Most (7.0 million persons, or 2.8 percent of the population) used psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically. In addition to the estimated 5.2 million nonmedical users of pain relievers in 2006, 1.8 million used tranquilizers, 1.2 million used stimulants, and 385,000 used sedatives. The numbers of nonmedical users of tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives were similar to the corresponding numbers in 2005, and the percentage rates also remained stable.

In 2005, rates of current alcohol use were 4.2 percent among persons aged 12 or 13, 15.1 percent of persons aged 14 or 15, 30.1 percent of 16 or 17 year olds, 51.1 percent of those aged 18 to 20, and 67.4 percent of 21 to 25 year olds . Among older age groups, the prevalence of alcohol use decreased with increasing age, from 63.7 percent among 26 to 29 year olds to 47.5 percent among 60 to 64 year olds and 40.0 percent among people aged 65 or older.

The number and the percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem remained unchanged between 2007 (2.0 million, 7.9 percent) and 2008 (1.9 million, 7.8 percent); however, there was a significant decrease between 2002 (2.3 million, 9.1 percent) and 2008. Of the 1.9 million teens who needed treatment in 2008, 143,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (about 7.4 percent of the teens who needed treatment), leaving 1.8 million who needed treatment for a substance use problem but did not receive it at a specialty facility.

Between 2002 and 2006, the percentages of persons with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs (3.0 percent in 2002, 2.9 percent in 2003, 3.0 percent in 2004, 2.8 percent in 2005, and 2.9 percent in 2006) and with dependence on or abuse of alcohol (7.7 percent in 2002, 7.5 percent in 2003, 7.8 percent in 2004, 7.7 percent in 2005, and 7.6 percent in 2006) remained unchanged.
