This includes treatment received in the past year at any location, such as in a hospital, at a rehabilitation facility (outpatient or inpatient), mental health center, emergency room, private doctor's office, self-help group, or prison/jail. The definition of treatment in this section is different from the definition of treatment used in measuring the drug abuse treatment gap, which is described in Section 7.3 and excludes treatment at an emergency room, private doctor's office, self-help group, prison or jail, or at a hospital as an outpatient.
In 2002.2003, 44 percent of those who were determined to be dependent on or abusing alcohol in the past year were estimated to be dependent on alcohol in the past year (Tables B.14 and B.15). State estimates for alcohol dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 2.7 percent in Tennessee to 4.8 percent in the District of Columbia (Table B.15). Six of the States in the top fifth for dependence on or abuse of alcohol also could be found in the top fifth for dependence on alcohol for persons aged 12 or older. Drug addicts and alcoholics may find that they are able to sustain short periods of sobriety that will generally followed by a drug or alcohol relapse. This is why attending a drug or alcohol rehab treatment program will help the individual to maintain their focus on sobriety. With rare exception, it is only by getting intense long term professional help that individuals with severe drug addiction problems are able to achieve lasting sobriety.
