There was a significant increase in methamphetamine use among full-time college students aged 18 to 22 from 0.2 percent in 2004 to 0.5 percent in 2005. The rate was unchanged among other persons in that age group (1.0 percent in 2004 vs. 0.8 percent in 2005).

Methadone wears off a long time before the drug is out of the person's system; this factor can make excessive use of the drug extremely risky.

In 2006, 14.5 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year were dependent on or abused illegal drugs or alcohol in the past year, higher than the 6.3 percent who did not receive treatment or counseling.

Most of the States in the top fifth for past month binge use of alcohol for persons aged 12 or older were in the Northern parts of the United States; four of them were the same as those for past month use of alcohol: Colorado, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and Minnesota (Table A.8,.
