In 2005, heavy drinking was reported by 6.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older, or 16 million people. This percentage is similar to the rates of heavy drinking in 2002 (6.7 percent), 2003 (6.8 percent), and 2004 (6.9 percent).

By stimulating the internal reward system in the user?s brain, the use of drugs and alcohol will make the addict crave the substance repetitively in order to again stimulate this reward center. These strong cravings will often lead the addict to stop focusing on those things that used to be important to them, and to begin focusing instead on another dose of their drug of choice.

In 2008, an estimated 2.9 million persons aged 12 or older used an illegal drug for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to almost 8,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the number in 2007 (2.7 million). About three fifths of initiates (56.7 percent) were younger than age 18 when they first used, and 54.9 percent of new users were female. The average age at initiation among persons aged 12 to 49 was 18.8 years.

In 2005, an estimated 13.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older drove under the influence of alcohol at least once in the past year. This percentage has dropped since 2002, when it was 14.2 percent. The 2005 estimate corresponds to 31.7 million persons.

Studies show that someone who smokes marijuana regularly may be functioning at a suboptimal intellectual level all of the time.

In 2005, there were 5.5 million teens aged 12 to 17 (21.8 percent) who received treatment or counseling for emotional or behavior problems in the year prior to the interview. Adolescent girls were more likely than adolescent boys to report past year treatment for mental health problems (23.6 vs. 20.0 percent).
