Most (7.0 million persons, or 2.8 percent of the population) used psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically. In addition to the estimated 5.2 million nonmedical users of pain relievers in 2006, 1.8 million used tranquilizers, 1.2 million used stimulants, and 385,000 used sedatives. The numbers of nonmedical users of tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives were similar to the corresponding numbers in 2005, and the percentage rates also remained stable.
