Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Persons who made no effort to receive treatment were more likely to report that they were not ready to stop using (45.3 percent) as a reason for not receiving treatment than persons who made an effort to receive treatment (21.1 percent) (2004 2005 combined data). Among those who made no effort to receive treatment, 26.3 percent reported stigma and 31.0 percent reported cost and insurance barriers as reasons for not receiving treatment.
The specific illegal drugs that had the highest levels of past year dependence or abuse in 2005 were marijuana, followed by cocaine and pain relievers. Of the 6.8 million persons aged 12 or older classified with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs, 4.1 million were dependent on or abused marijuana in 2005. This number represents 1.7 percent of the total population aged 12 or older and 59.9 percent of all those classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse. There were 1.5 million persons who were classified with dependence on or abuse of cocaine, about the same as the number classified with dependence on or abuse of pain relievers.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rate of current illegal drug use was similar for boys (9.8 percent) and girls (9.7 percent). In 2006, male and female adolescents had similar rates of current marijuana use (6.8 and 6.4 percent) and nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics (3.1 and 3.5 percent, respectively).
Because of the way cocaine affects the mesolimbic reward pathway, cocaine is addictive. Nevertheless, cocaine is used in medicine as a topical anesthetic, even in children, specifically in eye, nose and throat surgery.
While heroin can be sniffed, snorted or smoked, most users inject the drug into a muscle or vein. Heroin facts show that pregnant women who share needles are at risk of contracting HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and passing it on to their babies.
The individual that becomes dependent of Xanax no longer takes the medication for anxiety; the addicted patient now takes the drug for the anxiety that is caused by withdrawal from the medication.
