In 2002, the percentage of persons estimated to be dependent on alcohol in the past year was about 45 percent of those who were determined to be dependent on or abusing alcohol in the past year. State estimates for alcohol dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 2.8 percent in Pennsylvania to 5.2 percent in the District of Columbia. Seven of the States in the top fifth for dependence on or abuse of alcohol also could be found in the top fifth for dependence on alcohol for persons aged 12 or older: Colorado, District of Columbia, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and South Dakota. Of the remaining three States in the top fifth for dependence on alcohol, Michigan ranked in the second fifth for alcohol dependence or abuse, Louisiana in the middle fifth, and South Carolina in the next-to-lowest fifth. The highest rates for alcohol dependence occurred in the 18 to 25 age group, with Rhode Island having the highest rate.about 12.0 percent.

Among full-time college students aged 19, current cigarette smoking increased from 24.4 percent in 2005 to 28.8 percent in 2006; however, it decreased for students aged 20 (from 32.3 to 27.2 percent) and 21 (from 36.3 to 30.2 percent). Past month cigarette smoking also declined from 32.9 to 23.5 percent among Hispanic full-time students aged 18 to 22. Use of any tobacco product and of the individual products remained stable for persons aged 18 to 22 who were not enrolled as full-time college students.

In 2008, the number of new nonmedical users of OxyContin® aged 12 or older was 478,000, with an average age at first use of 21.8 years among those aged 12 to 49. These estimates are similar to those for 2007 (554,000 and 24.0 years, respectively). OxyContin® initiation declined between 2004 (615,000) and 2008.

The more help that an individual is given in order to conquer their drug or alcohol addiction, the more successful that their results will be. Also, those individuals who attend a drug rehab treatment center for a period that is longer than 3 months will usually have better outcomes than those who opt to stay a shorter amount of time.

In 2008, there were 10.6 million adults aged 18 or older (4.7 percent) who reported an unmet need for mental health care in the past year. This included 5.1 million adults who did not receive any mental health services in the past year. Among adults who did receive some type of mental health service in the past year, 17.9 percent (5.4 million) reported an unmet need for mental health care.
