Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
More boys than girls aged 12 to 20 reported current alcohol use (28.9 vs. 27.5 percent, respectively), binge drinking (21.3 vs. 16.1 percent), and heavy drinking (7.6 vs. 4.3 percent) in 2005 .
The highest prevalence of binge and heavy drinking in 2004 was for young adults aged 18 to 25 (41.2 and 15.1 percent, respectively). The peak rate of both measures occurred at age 21 (48.2 and 19.2 percent, respectively).
Slightly more than half of Americans aged 12 or older reported being current drinkers of alcohol in the 2006 survey (50.9 percent). This translates to an estimated 125 million people, which is similar to the 2005 estimate of 126 million people (51.8 percent).
According to Drug Abuse Warning Network, or DAWN, heroin and morphine accounted for 51% of drug deaths ruled accidental or unexpected in 1999.
There were no changes between 2002 and 2005 in the percentages of persons with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs (3.0 percent in 2002, 2.9 percent in 2003, 3.0 percent in 2004, and 2.8 percent in 2005) and dependence on or abuse of alcohol (7.7 percent in 2002, 7.5 percent in 2003, 7.8 percent in 2004, and 7.7 percent in 2005). However, there was a decrease in the rate of dependence on or abuse of marijuana from 2004 to 2005 (1.9 to 1.7 percent).
Related to the prevalence of marijuana use is the number of persons in a period of time who used marijuana for the first time ever. When the number of first-time users of a substance increases for a number of consecutive years, the prevalence rate for the substance tends to increase also. The average annual incidence of marijuana for this report is estimated somewhat differently than in the national report. The estimate for a single year is averaged over the 2 most recent years and expressed as a percentage or rate per 100 person years of exposure.6 For the combined years 2002.2003, the national marijuana incidence rate for all persons aged 12 or older was 1.8 percent. Vermont had the highest rate, 2.7 percent.
