Several national organizations have released statements of strong support for the new collaborative action plan to that has been implemented in order to fight prescription drug abuse; this plan was developed by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This new plan calls for healthcare provider training and increased patient education in regard to prescription medications, expanded monitoring of their use, better disposal of unwanted and/or unused drugs, and the shut-down of so-called pill mills in the U.S.

In 2006, there were 1.4 million teens (5.5 percent) aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an alcohol use problem. Of this group, only 101,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (0.4 percent of all teens and 7.2 percent of teens who needed treatment), leaving 1.3 million teens who needed but did not receive treatment.

Illegal drugs other than marijuana include cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. The national estimate of past month use of any illegal drug other than marijuana among persons aged 12 or older was 3.7 percent for 2002.2003 combined.
