Anchorage, Alaska

Introduction to Anchorage, Alaska

The city of Anchorage is located in the south-central part of Alaska at the base of the Chugach Mountains. The largest city in the state, Anchorage encompasses an area of nearly 2,000 square miles, about the size of the state of Delaware. The city sits on a triangular peninsula surrounded by the Cook Inlet, which is the northernmost reach of the Pacific Ocean. The Chugach, Kenai, Talkeetna, Tordrillo, Aleutian and Alaska mountain ranges are all visible from the city, and on clear days so is Mount McKinley, North America's tallest mountain, which is located 130 miles north of Anchorage.

Roughly twice the size of Rhode Island, Anchorage encompasses an area of nearly 2,000 square miles. In terms of population it is Alaska's largest city, comprising over 40% of the state's population. The city's Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is the center of airline activity for the state, and is served by many interstate, national, and international airlines. There is one officially designated Interstate Highway in Anchorage: Alaska State Highway 1, which runs through the city. Anchorage is a major port city, receiving the bulk of all freight entering Alaska. Major industries in the city include government (military), oil, and tourism (summer being a prime tourist season).

Although Russian explorers had established themselves in southern Alaska during the late 18th-century, English explorer Captain James Cook is credited with first exploring and describing the Anchorage area in 1778. The area retained a heavy Russian cultural influence during the next hundred years owing to a large volume of trading throughout the Russian possession of Alaska. Things began to change in 1867 concurrent with the sale of "Russian America" to the United States for a sum of $7,200,000. Although the sale was mocked at the time and known as "Seward's Folly" (referring to U.S. Secretary of State William Seward who pushed for the purchase of the territory), the subsequent major discovery of oil in the territory helped change this perception. In 1915 construction of the Alaska Railroad began and Ship Creek Landing in Anchorage was selected as headquarters for this effort, transforming Anchorage into a bustling frontier town. Anchorage was incorporated as a city in 1920, a good 39 years before Alaska would attain statehood. A setback occurred on March 27, 1964, when Anchorage was hit by the Good Friday Earthquake. This natural disaster, which registered 9.2 on the Richter Scale (the largest ever recorded in North America), caused tremendous destruction from which the city ultimately recovered and was able to continue prospering. Anchorage today serves as the hub of the state’s transportation, communication, finance and trade industries, and is in every sense a modern city housing a thriving business district and a bustling international airport.

One of the city's most popular attractions is the Northern Lights. Also known as Aurora Borealis, the lights appear in the sky as glowing swaying ripples which fold and unfold when the sun's electrically charged particles react to the earth's magnetic field. Fall, winter and spring are the prime seasons for viewing the lights, which most often appear near midnight.

Pro sports in Anchorage can be found at the Sullivan Arena, home to the Alaska Aces of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). The city's only other professional franchise is the Alaska Wild, an indoor football team in the Intense Football League (IFL), which is scheduled to commence play for the first time in April 2007.

Do you have a problem with drug or alcohol addiction and live in Anchorage, Alaska? Are you concerned about a family member in Anchorage, who has a problem like this? Whatever your situation it's easy to believe that you're alone with this . . . that, somehow, you have to solve the problem all on your own. That is not the case. We care about you - and will help you find a Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehabilitation Center in Anchorage, suited to your specific treatment needs. You don't have to deal with drug addiction or alcoholism on your own!

An Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Program in Anchorage, is a good option for the treatment of drug addiction and alcoholism. The goal of a Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehab Program in Anchorage, AK. is to direct the initial treatment plan toward the ability of the individual to stop using drugs and/or alcohol and hence avoid the psychological, legal, financial, social, and physical consequences that are usually associated with drug addiction and alcoholism.

There are many different addiction treatment approaches such as Long-term Addiction Treatment Facilities, Outpatient Addiction Recovery Programs, Short-term Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers, Inpatient Addiction Treatment Centers, support group meetings, drug counseling, halfway houses and sober living.

Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Centers in Anchorage, typically focus on the two-fold nature of drug addiction and alcoholism: physical and psychological addiction. Physical addiction can be treated by a detoxification program in Anchorage, Alaska with treatment procedure to assist with the painful withdrawal symptoms which manifest themselves when a person discontinues the consumption of a drug or drugs that they are addicted to. With habitual use of a psychoactive substance the brain gradually adapts to the presence of the drug so the desired effect becomes minimal. This is how physical tolerance develops to drugs such as heroin, amphetamines, cocaine, nicotine and alcohol to name a few. It also explains why more and more of the drug is needed to get the same effect with habitual use of an addictive drug. The abrupt cessation of an addictive drug can lead to serious withdrawal symptoms where the body may take weeks or months (depending on the drug involved) to return to normal function. The withdrawal symptoms from certain substances, such as heroin, can induce severe and painful withdrawal symptoms, and be quite prolonged.

A Drug Rehab or Alcohol Treatment Facility in Anchorage, will not only provide the person with a professional detox but also provide an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility for the psychological issues inevitably underlying all drug and alcohol addiction problems, so as to decrease the chances of relapse and increase the chances of a clean and sober life.

An Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Rehab Facility in Anchorage, AK. is more likely to be one of the most successful methods for treating an individual with a severe drug addiction problem. Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Facilities in Anchorage, are designed to deliver a comprehensive treatment curriculum and assist a person in every facet of their life 24 hours a day.

For a person to make a successful recovery, they must acquire new knowledge, abilities and 'life skills'. This new knowledge, abilities and life skills must be directed toward strategies for returning home to Anchorage, from an Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Center and encountering old drug using acquaintances in Anchorage - as well as ways to handle the many reminders and triggers of their past drug using days in Anchorage. These triggers can produce memories which can produce psychological stressors. These psychological stressors often hinder the recovering addict, making it very difficult for them to feel as though they have control over their actions concerning drug using impulses. This is because research into the brain of addicts shows changes in the way their brain functions long after they have discontinued using drugs and/or alcohol. This is the main reason why even an individual with will power as strong as steel may find it extremely difficult to overcome drug addiction or alcoholism without professional addiction treatment. With so many obstacles such as triggers, drug cravings, and changes in the way their brain functions due to habitual drug use, it is no surprise why so many people attend a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Treatment Program each year to successfully recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

There are many reasons why a person should enroll into an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehab Center in Anchorage. A few of the many reasons are: the inability to control or eliminate their drinking or drug use, alienating their friends and family, legal problems, severe depression and general unhappiness due to excessive drug or alcohol use.

Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Nationally, 6.2 percent of all persons aged 12 or older reported using marijuana in the past month in 2002.2003 (Table B.3). Because marijuana is the predominant substance used by those using an illegal drug, States that had high prevalence rates for any illegal drug also had high prevalence rates for past month use of marijuana. Eight out of ten States in the top fifth for use of an illegal drug for persons aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for past month use of marijuana. In the 12 to 17 age group, seven States were in the top fifth for both use of any illegal drug and use of marijuana: Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Vermont. Eight States were common to the top fifth for past month marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older and teens aged 12 to 17: Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The States with the lowest rates of past month use of marijuana among persons aged 12 or older were in the South: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. The other States in the lowest fifth were Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, New Jersey, and Utah .

Among unemployed adults aged 18 or older in 2008, 19.6 percent were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the 8.0 percent of those employed full time and 10.2 percent of those employed part time. However, most illegal drug users were employed. Of the 17.8 million current illegal drug users aged 18 or older in 2008, 12.9 million (72.7 percent) were employed either full or part time. The number of unemployed illegal drug users increased from 1.3 million in 2007 to 1.8 million in 2008, primarily because of an overall increase in the number of unemployed persons.

The 2000 estimates of the number of cocaine initiates and age-specific incidence rates were slightly larger than their 1999 counterparts, but none of the increases was statistically significant.

One of the most important facts about heroin is that using this drug inevitably leads to drug addiction. Heroin addiction is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, and by neurochemical and molecular changes in the user's brain. Heroin also produces profound degrees of tolerance and physical dependence, which are also powerful motivating factors for compulsive use and abuse.

Withdrawal symptoms for most opiates are stronger approximately 24-72 hours after they begin and subside within 7-10 days.

Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years, 4.0 percent reported using illegal drugs in the past month based on combined 2005 and 2006 NSDUH data. This rate was significantly lower than the rate among women aged 15 to 44 who were not pregnant (10.0 percent). The 2003-2004 combined rate of current illegal drug use among pregnant women (4.6 percent) was not significantly different from the 2005-2006 combined rate.
