Studies of the brain show that Ecstasy affects serotonin, a system which plays a direct role in controlling our mood, aggression, sexual activity, sleep, and sensitivity to pain.
In 2008, during their most recent treatment in the past year, 2.7 million persons aged 12 or older reported receiving treatment for alcohol use, and 947,000 persons reported receiving treatment for marijuana use. Accordingly, estimates on receiving treatment for the use of other drugs were 663,000 persons for cocaine, 601,000 for pain relievers, 341,000 for heroin, 336,000 for stimulants, 326,000 for tranquilizers, and 287,000 for hallucinogens. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008. Also, none of these estimates changed significantly between 2002 and 2008, except that the numbers who received treatment for the use of pain relievers and tranquilizers in 2008 were higher than the numbers in 2002 (360,000 and 197,000 persons, respectively). (Note that respondents could indicate that they received treatment for more than one substance during their most recent treatment.)
The OxyContin diversion technique most used at the street level is doctor shopping. Individuals, who may or may not have a legitimate ailment, visit numerous doctors, sometimes in several states, to obtain prescriptions and acquire large amounts of OxyContin they abuse or sell to others.
Rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse show substantial variation by age. The rate for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse was 0.9 percent at age 12, and rates increased with age until the highest rate (22.8 percent) was reached at age 21. After age 21, the rates declined with age. The rate for persons aged 26 or older was 5.4 percent; the rate for persons aged 18 to 25 was 18.4 percent; and the rate for teens aged 12 to 17 was 7.8 percent.
More than one fifth (22.7 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking (having five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the 30 days prior to the survey) in 2005. This translates to about 55 million people, comparable with the estimate in 2004.
