Fresno, California

Introduction to Fresno, California

Fresno, whose name is the Spanish word for "ash tree," is located in the San Joaquin River Valley in central California, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Fresno's growth began in the 1870s after the site was selected as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. The area's great land and weather attracted farmers and ranchers, many of them immigrants, resulting in a melting pot of nearly 100 nationalities still reflected in Fresno's culture. In 1875, the raisin industry started in Fresno by accident, when grapes at a vineyard were allowed to dry on the vine.

Today, Fresno is among the nation's 40 most populous cities, with a population of around 430,000 and a rapidly-growing metro area. Fresno County's $3 billion agriculture business makes it the top county for agriculture in the country. Grapes, lettuce, cotton and tomatoes are the leaders among its more than 250 crops. Fresno's economy is also supported by diverse industries such as agricultural chemicals and equipment, food processing, computer software, glass and plastics. Aided by its proximity to both San Francisco and Los Angeles, Fresno is enjoying a growing convention business.

Fresno Culture

Fresno's cultural attractions are far more numerous than in other cities its size. The Saroyan Theatre, named for Fresno-born poet and author William Saroyan, hosts the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra and the Fresno Ballet. The city also has the Fresno Grand Opera, local theater companies, and music and dance productions. Its museums include the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, the Fresno Art Museum, the African-American Museum and the Discovery Center. Each October, Fresno's annual Blues Festival in the Tower District (under the famous namesake water tower), attracts thousands of fans. The Conours D'Elegance, held each spring at California State University in Fresno, is the nation's most eagerly anticipated antique auto show.

Fresno Sports and Leisure

The Fresno Grizzlies, triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, play minor league baseball at Grizzlies Stadium. For major league sports, Los Angeles (baseball's Dodgers, NBA's Lakers, NHL's Kings) and San Francisco (baseball's Giants, NFL's 49ers) are a short roadtrip away. The Fresno State Bulldogs, a perennial contender in basketball, play at Selland Arena. Fresno State has a strong fandom in all sports.

Fresno Outdoors

An agreeable climate, and proximity to both ocean and mountains combine to make Fresno a haven for lovers of the outdoors. For athletic Fresnans, surfing Pacific coast beaches such as Santa Cruz in the summer, then skiing the Sierras in the winter is commonplace. Sailing at Huntington Lake and canoeing the San Joaquin River are popular activities. And Fresno is the only city in the country surrounded by 3 national parks: Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Yosemite. Pebble Beach, the most storied golf course in the country, is just a 2-hour drive away (Spyglass Hill and Spanish Bay are two other top-rated courses in Pebble Beach).

Fresno at Night

Fresno's nightlife offers a myriad of music, dining and entertainment options reflecting the city's youth and diversity. The Tower District has many great places to see live music. Several wineries inhabit the area. Combining the best of both worlds, Fresno has big-city amenities while retaining a friendly, small-town atmosphere.

By doing this, these individuals can avoid the dreadful consequences that are so often associated with addiction and alcoholism. An individual that is able to remain sober will not have to deal with all of the negative consequences are so often linked to a drug or alcohol addiction problem.

There are so many available treatment approaches that are in close proximity to Fresno, including Short-term Addiction Treatment Facilities, Long-term Addiction Treatment Programs, Outpatient Addiction Treatment Centers, Inpatient Addiction Treatment Facilities, sober living, halfway houses, support group meetings and drug counseling. A quality Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Rehab Facility in Fresno, should make a point of focusing on both the physical and the psychological aspects of the drug or alcohol addiction. The physical aspect of the drug or alcohol addiction can be treated by the detoxification component of the Fresno, California Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehabilitation Facility; a treatment program will be able to assist the individual by helping to alleviate some of the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that accompany the detox process. The withdrawal symptoms occur because the brain has adapted to the consistent use of the substance; after a period of time, it will take more and more of the substance, in order to produce the same desired effects. It is at this point, that the individual from Fresno has developed a physical tolerance to the drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana, opiates, and alcohol, just to name a few. When an individual from Fresno, California abruptly discontinues any type of substance that their body has become accustomed to having, serious withdrawal symptoms may occur; the body may take several weeks or even months to return to normal functioning, depending on what types of drugs have been abused. If an individual from Fresno has been addicted to a drug such as heroin, the associated withdrawal symptoms may be much more severe.

An Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehab Facility in Fresno also needs to address the various psychological issues that are invariably associated with a drug or alcohol addiction; a comprehensive recovery program will utilize various treatment techniques in order to accomplish this. These components of the Fresno, California Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehab Center can include individual or group counseling, drug relapse prevention education and some form of aftercare treatment or follow up care. All of these elements of an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility will work in unison to help the individual from Fresno to get to the root of the drug or alcohol addiction, so that they can maintain long term sobriety.

The best possible solution for an individual from Fresno, CA. with a severe drug or alcohol addiction, is to locate a Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehab Facility that statistically has a high rate of long term success. A top notch Drug Rehab or Alcohol Treatment Center in Fresno will ultimately be equipped to administer a comprehensive treatment program that will help the individual in every single aspect of their daily lives.

In order for an individual from Fresno to experience a successful drug recovery, they have to relearn many of the skills that they will use in their daily lives. They will need to use these skills daily, when they return home to Fresno, California, where they will encounter some of the reminders and triggers from their drug using days. An Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Program in Fresno will have educated the recovering addict on how to successfully respond to these familiar triggers that can often produce a high amount of psychological stress.

Many individuals from Fresno, CA. may try to overcome a drug or alcohol addiction without professional help. Because of the ways in which drugs alter the various functions in the brain, an individual from Fresno with the strongest desire to overcome their drug or alcohol addiction on their own will only meet with failure. With all of the above mentioned challenges that are associated with overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction, it is no wonder that so many people from Fresno each year enroll in a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Treatment Center. There are so many important reasons why an individual should enroll in an Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Treatment Center in Fresno, but the best reason is to be able to once again be close to family and loved ones.

Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Rates of current alcohol use were 63.2 percent for full-time employed adults aged 18 or older in 2005, higher than the rate for unemployed adults (56.5 percent). However, the pattern was different for heavy alcohol use; the rate of heavy alcohol use was higher for unemployed persons (10.4 percent) than for full-time employed persons (8.4 percent). There was no significant difference in the rates of binge alcohol use between unemployed adults and adults employed full time.

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002, only five of the States with the 10 highest rates of past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the top fifth. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year cocaine use both among persons aged 12 or older and those aged 26 or older, but it was in the lowest fifth for those aged 12 to 17 and for those aged 18 to 25. Colorado was the only State that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

Methadone wears off a long time before the drug is out of the person's system; this factor can make excessive use of the drug extremely risky.

Rates of current use of illegal drugs were higher for young adults aged 18 to 25 (20.1 percent) than for teens aged 12 to 17 and adults aged 26 or older, with 16.6 percent using marijuana, 6.3 percent using prescription-type drugs nonmedically, 2.6 percent using cocaine, and 1.5 percent using hallucinogens.

Dr. Steven Juergens of Virginia Mason University was the first person to write about Xanax, in relation to the premise of the drug being highly addictive.

People who have substance abuse problems in their past generally have a greater chance of abusing Dilaudid when it is prescribed to them.
