Among full-time college students aged 18 to 22, there were increases from 2007 to 2008 in the current rate of use of hallucinogens (from 1.0 to 2.1 percent). Increases were seen for the specific hallucinogens Ecstasy (from 0.5 to 1.2 percent) and LSD (from 0.3 to 0.6 percent). There were no significant changes in the rates of current use for any drugs among persons aged 18 to 22 who were not full-time college students.

Although boys were more likely than girls to be current illegal drug users in 2008, the rate of current illegal drug use among girls aged 12 or older increased from 5.8 percent in 2007 to 6.3 percent in 2008. However, the rate did not change significantly for boys (10.4 and 9.9 percent for 2007 and 2008, respectively). Current marijuana use also increased from 3.8 to 4.4 percent among girls, but for boys there was no significant change (8.0 and 7.9 percent, respectively).

Many prescription pills can appear to be identical looking, but depending on the drug and the dosage, the effects can vary greatly from mild to lethal.

There was a slight relationship between high rates of past year illegal drug dependence and high rates of past year cocaine use for persons aged 12 or older at the State level. Four States were ranked among the highest for both measures: District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Rhode Island.

Inhalant users may experience a sense of euphoria, dizziness and sometimes become violently ill and sometimes experience numbness in the upper and lower extremities. Many "huffers" often describe the feeling of being outside their body.
