In 2005, among persons aged 12 or older, 14.6 percent of Asians, 24.5 percent of Hispanics, 28.4 percent of blacks, 30.3 percent of Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, 31.2 percent of whites, 33.9 percent of persons who reported two or more races, and 41.7 percent of American Indians or Alaska Natives reported that they had used a tobacco product in the past month. There were no statistically significant changes in past month tobacco use between 2004 and 2005 among any of these groups.

Among adults aged 18 or older with MDE in the past year, 9.6 percent were heavy alcohol users in the past month, higher than the 7.1 percent of heavy alcohol users without MDE in the past year. Similarly, among adults with past year MDE, the rate of daily cigarette use in the past month was 29.1 percent, while the rate was 15.2 percent among adults without past year MDE.

The number of current users of Ecstasy had decreased between 2002 and 2003, from 676,000 to 470,000, but the number did not change between 2003 and 2004 (450,000).

Past-year use of crack cocaine amongst eighth graders rose slightly between 1997-98, although no changes were found for other grades.

The rate of past month tobacco use among teens aged 12 to 17 decreased from 12.4 percent in 2007 to 11.4 percent in 2008. This decrease was driven by a decline in the rate of past month cigarette use that was statistically significant (9.8 to 9.1 percent) and a decline in past month cigar use that was not statistically significant (4.2 to 3.8 percent). The rate of past month cigarette use among 12 to 17 year olds declined from 13.0 percent in 2002 to 9.1 percent in 2008. One half million or 2.2 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 used smokeless tobacco in 2008 compared with 2.0 percent in 2002; this slight increase was not statistically significant.
