In 2005, there were 872,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used cocaine for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to approximately 2,400 initiates per day. This estimate was lower than the number in 2002 (1.0 million).

In Panama City, Florida, two incidents caused law enforcement there to be alerted to the drug?s serious effects. In one incident, several police officers were needed to subdue a man who tore a radar unit out of a police car with his teeth. In another incident, police reported that a woman attacked her own mother with a machete, thinking that she was a monster. After investigating the incidents, it was noted that both individuals were under the influence of bath salts that they had purchased legally in the state.

In 2008, there were 10.6 million adults aged 18 or older (4.7 percent) who reported an unmet need for mental health care in the past year. This included 5.1 million adults who did not receive any mental health services in the past year. Among adults who did receive some type of mental health service in the past year, 17.9 percent (5.4 million) reported an unmet need for mental health care. (Unmet need among adults who received mental health services may reflect a delay in care or a perception of insufficient care.)
